A fabulous morning of festive entertainment at Gretna Gateway on Sunday saw Laurieknowe Primary lift the top prize in the Grand Final of this year’s Xmas Factor Primary Schools Carol-singing Competition.
Organised by Gretna Gateway and West Sound, the contest was in its eighth year and was open to primary schools right across Dumfries & Galloway. Five schools had made it through to the Final following a public vote on the West Sound website - Cargenbridge, Crossmichael, Loreburn, Langholm and Laurieknowe. This year’s judges were Lisa McNab from Gretna Gateway, Tommy Jardine, host of West Sound’s Breakfast Show, and Roy Stairmand, Chairman of Dumfries Musical Theatre Company.
Laurieknowe Primary, who won the competition in 2012, impressed the judges with their performance of Deck the Halls and won a cheque for £500 plus a special Xmas Factor trophy. Each of the runner-up schools received a cheque for £50 and a special Finalist’s certificate.
Lisa McNab, Gretna Gateway said; “As always, it was a great pleasure to hear the children sing their carols and it was obvious that they and their teachers had been working incredibly hard to practice for the Final. It’s always incredibly difficult to choose a winner, but we felt that Laurieknowe’s enthusiasm and musicality just gave them the edge on the day. We’d like to thank all of the schools that took part for all their hard work and enthusiasm. Particular thanks goes to all of the children. It’s wonderful to hear them sing and they should take great pride in the fact that they have given a huge number of Gretna Gateway shoppers and West Sound listeners a great deal of pleasure this Christmas.”
The Finalists and their carols were as follows:
Cargenbridge Primary – Away in a Manger
Crossmichael Primary – Good Christian Men Rejoice
Langholm Primary – Silent Night
Laurieknowe Primary – Deck the Halls
Loreburn Primary – Hark the Herald Angels Sing
