Dumfries & Galloway-based Gretna Gateway Outlet Village has announced its eighth consecutive year of record trading figures.
The Outlet Village now employs over 550 people and is home to over 50 stores including leading names such as Next Outlet, Skechers, M&S Outlet, Nike Factory Store, GAP Outlet, Clarks Outlet, Molton Brown, Berghaus, Jacques Vert, Cadbury and Costa. For 2016 up to 24th December and with one big SALE week still to come, total sales at Gretna Gateway rose 12% on 2015, with like-for-like sales up 7% and visitor numbers +1% for the same period – and Christmas week itself saw sales grow by 4% overall vs 2015 and by 3% like-for-like, despite the best efforts of Storm Barbara to disrupt trade.
The impressive results mark the final year of Peter Gardner’s tenure as General Manager at Gretna Gateway. After more than 17 years at the helm, Peter will shortly be leaving the business for personal reasons. Peter has been General Manager at Gretna Gateway since 1999, when the Outlet Village was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal.
Since then, he has overseen two further phases of development, the construction of two new car parks and the creation of an ever-strengthening tenant line-up and product mix to both attract and please increasing visitor numbers. Over two million customers now visit the Outlet Village every year.
Peter Gardner, General Manager, Gretna Gateway Outlet Village said;
“We’re delighted that 2016 will be yet another record-breaking year here at Gretna Gateway (our 8th-consecutive best-ever year since the banking collapse in 2008). We welcomed more big brand names, including global footwear giant, Skechers, have fashion leisurewear brand Bench opening in January, and a brand new Pizza Express restaurant opening next month will also significantly strengthen our catering offer and appeal to locals and passing traffic alike. Over the years, the combination of an excellent strategic location, great tenant line-up and product mix, exceptionally good value and superb customer service have proved a winning formula and we’d like to thank all of our loyal customers for continuing to shop here.”
Peter Gardner continued:
“On a personal level, I’m very proud of what we have achieved at Gretna Gateway since 1999 and of what we have contributed to the local economy and employment. With over 550 staff, Gretna Gateway is now one of Dumfries and Galloway’s major employers and attracts over 2 million customers every year. The addition of Phase 3 and Next Outlet last year, and of the 300-space North Car Park this year show that there is yet more to come from Gretna Gateway, and I wish my successor, Scott Wells, and Lisa McNab and Neil Irving (who have been there for 17 and 15 years), plus all of Gretna Gateway’s staff, tenants and customers every success for the future. I have worked with a lot of good people, many of whom have become good friends, and I will take many good memories with me, but it’s time for me to move on, and I know I’m leaving Gretna Gateway in capable hands and with lots more to look forward to.”
